A lot of people are frequently looking for the most worthwhile directories to submit to. Where it’s based on PR, link popularity, etc, a good thorough list is needed to further strengthen the concept of the “strongest” directories.
Jeff at Aviva Directory has put together a phenomenal list of the so called “strongest” directories based on SEOMoz.org’s Pagestrength tool.
You can see the list here.
Short Excerpt:
A common question asked in all the forums is: “What are the best directories to pay to submit my website to?”
If you ask this, you’ll get lots of responses. But generally, the responses tend to list the directories that are most popular or that are owned by the person answering the question or his or her buddies.
There really is a lack of objective evidence as to which directories are truly good.
Bob Mutch attempted to address this somewhat by developing a measure known as ILQ or Inbound Link Quality. ILQ measures the number of inbound links a directory has from dir.yahoo.com, dmoz, .edu and .gov sites……

The booming directory industry has given way to a new era of niche directories that target interesting topics. These niche directories allow internet users to search a specific niche for high quality websites of that topic which can bring better results than major search engines. CelebrityContest.net Entertainment Directory is a perfect example of a professionally run niche directory.
Built off the very interesting CelebrityContest.net, which allows you to play a game similar to the stock market by buying and selling celebrities, the Celebrities Directory allows internet users to search for high quality celebrities web sites. The categories are arranged by celebrity genre including television, cinema, music, sport, and more.
Browsers are able to view the latest keywords searched in the keywords tab, as well as viewing a large list of recent keywords in the cloud tab so they can find entertainment web sites much easier.
CelebrityContest.net Entertainment Directory is a high quality, seo friendly directory that targets a very popular and interesting niche and is a great resource for celebrity based sites.

In 2006, webmasters saw a large boom in the directory business. Scripts such as Esyndicat and PHP Link Directory allowed ordinary webmasters to tap into the directory niche. As the year went on, many saw directories come and go as webmaster’s learned of the hard work and dedication in order to run a successful and profitable directory. As we enter 2007, there is one specific directory that has made strong name for itself in the directory world, Aviva Directory.
Aviva Directory was launched in early February of 2005 with the mindset of creating a spam free, search engine friendly directory that was a step above the rest. At the beginning, like many directories, Aviva started as a blank canvas and eventually evolved into a work of art. Now, almost two full years later, Aviva Directory is known to be one of the strongest and most beneficial directories on the internet.
Aviva Directory allows webmasters to submit their websites to a quality spam free resource that carries traffic and link value. Website owners can browse through various categories of interest such as the popular categories of: Business, Real Estate, Insurance, Employment, Health, Jewelry, and Clothing. In addition, Aviva Directory offers a wide variety of internet and internet marketing related categories that have proven to be very beneficial to directory owners, internet marketers, and webmasters in many other related fields.
Unlike most directories, Aviva Directory offers many other resources for webmasters and business owners. Wondering How to incorporate a business? Aviva knows the ropes with a detailed article on exactly how to get started. More beneficial articles include: 99 Ways to Cheaply Brand a Startup, 21 Surefire Tips for a Successful Blog Launch, and the Strongest Directories.
The owner of Aviva Directory spend thousands of dollars each month to insure Aviva Directory is not only promoted well, but also maintains strong page strength, quality targeted traffic, and superior editorial integrity. With its growing Alexa rank of 8,154, Aviva Directory is making a name for itself as one of the web’s best overall directories.

I have been watching the directory industry explode within the past year and have been noticing a startling problem: Lack of Originality.
As I have watched the directory industry grow, a large amount of free templates, scripts, and category dumps have been available to webmasters which they have been using, and frankly now overusing.
To combat this uniformity movement, I would like to call for a change:
I would like to challenge directory owners (new & old) to redesign or restructure your directory to make it unique to your directory and your directory only. Whether it is changing of css on your existing template or designing of a new template, this change, I believe, will strengthen this industry and give yourself a new brand to build on.
In rewarding this change: I will offer free, permanent links on my blog to every owner who shows a sufficient change to the appearance of their site. Also, I plan to report of these changes through blog posting and I hope other directory owners will endorse this change as well (PM me if you are willing to donate to this cause).
In any case, I hope this gets the attention of directory owners and makes a positive difference.
Thanks
